This is an in
teresting story. Artist, Christine Finley, has come up with a brilliant way to promote recycling and environmental awareness… by decorating dumpsters with wallpaper. If you think about, there’s nothing pleasant about dumpster or even taking out the trash. By wrapping them in decorative wallpaper, Finley believes that it will change how people perceive dumpsters, along with the contents people decide to throw away. According to Treehugger.com, Finley mentions that, “Wallpapered Dumpsters transform environmental activism into unexpected beauty. I like to think of these interventions as polite graffiti. This project is an inquiry into urban waste, free art, and notions of femininity, beauty and domesticity.” Finley has already pursued this venture by decorating dumpsters in Los Angeles and New York; she also has plans to bring her work to cities in Europe throughout 2010.
More importantly, Finley doesn’t mind if others want to replicate her work. She actually encourages people to take actions and plans on creating a video, educating people on her methods. Finley stated, “I love when people take an idea and re-create it. That’s one of the great things about art – you can beg, borrow and steal. There are no rights or copyrights. It’s all free.”
So if you’re looking for ways to promote environmental responsibility and to show you’re eco-friendly, why not follow Finley’s example and decorate a dumpster? This project is not only inexpensive to do, it just may encourage others to change their waste disposal habits i.e. to stop throwing away recyclables and reusables in regular dumpsters. To put this in perspective, wouldn’t you think twice before throwing away old newspapers or aluminum cans in a Finley decorated dumpster? I know I would.
